About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck over 317 million cents for circulation in 1973 with the "S" mintmark. The facility's circulation-strike cent production was winding down during this period, as San Francisco increasingly focused on its role as the nation's proof coin manufacturer.

The 1973-S circulation cent is available in all grades. While its mintage is lower than Philadelphia and Denver, it is not scarce. Collectors include it without difficulty in their date-and-mintmark sets. Within a few years, San Francisco would cease producing cents for general circulation entirely.
