About this coinHistory

The 1973-S Proof cent was produced at San Francisco with a mintage of approximately 2.76 million pieces. The proof sets shipped to collectors during a year when the news was dominated by Watergate testimony and the Saturday Night Massacre, in which President Nixon fired the special prosecutor investigating the scandal.

The proof cent itself was unaffected by the political drama. It features crisp, fully detailed devices on mirror-like fields. The 1973-S Proof is affordable and widely available. Cameo examples, with contrasting frosted design elements, are not difficult to find from this era of proof production.
