The 1974 Aluminum cent is one of the most controversial coins in American numismatic history. In late 1973 and early 1974, rising copper prices prompted the U.S. Mint to experiment with alternative compositions for the cent. The Mint produced approximately 1.5 million experimental aluminum cents, striking them on lightweight aluminum planchets at the Philadelphia facility. The coins weighed significantly less than standard copper cents and had a distinctly silvery appearance.
Congress considered but ultimately rejected legislation to authorize the aluminum cent. The Mint recalled and melted nearly all of the test pieces. However, a small number escaped destruction. At least one confirmed example, a specimen given to a Mint official, has been authenticated. Additional examples are rumored to exist, though the government has historically asserted that all aluminum cents remain federal property and should be returned.
The legal status of surviving examples has been debated for decades. In 2014, a 1974 aluminum cent was consigned to auction but withdrawn under pressure from the Mint, which maintained that the coin had not been officially released. The few known pieces occupy a gray area between legitimate numismatic collectibles and unreleased government property. The 1974 Aluminum cent stands as a fascinating artifact of a policy debate that foreshadowed the actual composition change that would come eight years later in 1982.
