About this coinHistory

The 1974-D Aluminum cent is a companion piece to the Philadelphia Aluminum cent from the same year. The Denver Mint also participated in the experimental program that produced aluminum test cents, though even fewer Denver examples are documented. Like the Philadelphia version, these coins were struck on lightweight aluminum blanks as Congress considered changing the cent's composition.

When Congress declined to authorize the aluminum cent, the Mint ordered all examples returned and destroyed. Whether any Denver-minted specimens survived the recall is uncertain. The 1974-D Aluminum remains one of the most elusive and legally contentious coins in American numismatics. Collectors can acknowledge its existence in the historical record, but the likelihood of ever acquiring a genuine example is essentially zero.
