About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced over 5.45 billion cents in 1975, the highest single-mint total in the Memorial series up to that point. The country was struggling economically. Inflation ran above 9%, unemployment climbed, and the fall of Saigon in April marked the end of the Vietnam War after years of bitter division at home.

The enormous 1975 production reflects the inflationary economy: rising prices meant more transactions, more cash registers ringing, and more demand for the lowest-denomination coin. The 1975 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and is one of the most common dates in the entire series. Collectors obtain it with ease.
