About this coinHistory

The 1976-S Proof cent was struck at San Francisco in notably higher quantities than previous years, with a mintage of approximately 4.15 million pieces. The surge in proof set orders was driven by Bicentennial enthusiasm; collectors purchasing the specially designed Bicentennial proof coins also received the standard-design cent, nickel, and dime in their sets.

The proof cent itself features no Bicentennial design elements. It carries the same Lincoln obverse and Memorial reverse as every other year. The higher-than-usual mintage makes the 1976-S Proof slightly more available than proofs from adjacent years, and it is priced accordingly. Cameo and deep cameo examples are plentiful.
