About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint struck over 6 billion cents in 1979, a year bookended by crisis. The Iranian Revolution in January toppled the Shah, and in November, Iranian students seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. The hostage crisis would dominate the news for 444 days. A second oil shock sent gasoline prices soaring again.

The 1979 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and was produced in enormous quantity. It is extremely common and inexpensive.
