The 1979-S Type 2 Proof cent features what collectors call the "Clear S" mintmark, a sharper, more distinctly shaped "S" compared to the earlier Type 1 "Filled S" used on the majority of 1979 proof production. Partway through the proof run, the Mint began using a new mintmark punch that produced a cleaner, more well-defined letter.
The Type 2 is considerably scarcer than the Type 1 because it was introduced late in the production cycle. The combined proof mintage of approximately 3.68 million sets is dominated by Type 1 coins. The Type 2 carries a noticeable premium, particularly in deep cameo condition. Collectors seeking the clear mintmark should examine the "S" under magnification; the difference is distinct once both types are seen side by side. Third-party grading services designate both types on their holders.
