About this coinHistory

The 1982-D Bronze cent is the only Denver variety from 1982 struck in the traditional 95% copper composition. Denver's bronze production ended during 1982 as the facility transitioned to the new copper-plated zinc planchets. The "D" mintmark identifies it, and the bronze composition is confirmed by its 3.1-gram weight.

Denver's combined 1982 mintage exceeded 6 billion across all varieties, but the Bronze version represents only a portion of that total. Unlike Philadelphia, which produced both Large Date and Small Date varieties in bronze, Denver's bronze cents came only in the Large Date style. The 1982-D Bronze is a one-of-a-kind entry in the seven-variety set and is required for completeness. Collectors who find one in pocket change can confirm it by weighing the coin or listening for the ringing tone that distinguishes copper from zinc.
