About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced over 5.64 billion cents in 1985. The American economy continued its expansion, though cracks were appearing. The farm crisis devastated rural communities in the Midwest, with thousands of family farms facing foreclosure. Live Aid concerts in July raised money for African famine relief and drew global audiences.

The 1985 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark. It is common in all grades and was produced in quantities that ensured wide availability for decades to come. Collectors include it as a standard issue in their Memorial cent sets.
