About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced over 6.61 billion cents in 1996. The centennial Olympic Games were held in Atlanta during the summer, marred by a pipe bomb explosion in Centennial Olympic Park that killed two people. President Clinton won reelection in November, defeating Bob Dole. The economy was surging, powered by the dot-com boom.

The 1996 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and is common in all grades. It circulated in enormous quantities during a period of strong economic growth. Collectors include it as a standard date.
