About this coinHistory

The 1998-S Close AM Proof is the reverse of the 1992 Close AM story. In 1992, proof-style reverse dies (with the Close AM) accidentally appeared on circulation strikes. In 1998, the situation flipped: a circulation-style reverse die (with the Wide AM) was mistakenly paired with proof obverse dies at San Francisco, producing proof cents with the Wide AM spacing. However, the variety listed here as "Close AM" follows the database designation.

The Close AM/Wide AM distinction refers to the spacing between the letters "A" and "M" in "AMERICA" on the reverse. On proof coins, the standard configuration through the 1990s was Close AM (letters nearly touching). The die-mixing errors of 1998 and 1999 created proof coins with the "wrong" reverse die. These varieties are scarce and carry significant premiums. Authentication is recommended, as the spacing difference requires careful examination. Collectors who track AM varieties consider the 1998-S a key piece in the set.
