About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced over 5.23 billion cents in 1999. The year was dominated by Y2K fears: governments, businesses, and individuals spent months preparing for the possibility that computer systems would malfunction when the calendar rolled over from December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000. The Columbine High School massacre in April shocked the nation when two students killed 13 people before taking their own lives.

The 1999 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and is common. It circulated during the final year of both the twentieth century and the millennium (though purists noted the millennium technically ended December 31, 2000). Collectors include it as a standard issue.
