The 1999-S Close AM Proof is another example of the die-mixing varieties that affected Lincoln cent production in the late 1990s. Like the 1998-S Close AM Proof, this coin was produced when reverse dies intended for one purpose (proof or circulation) were accidentally used in the other context.
The "A" and "M" in "AMERICA" on the reverse provide the key diagnostic. Proof coins from this era were normally struck with the Close AM reverse, but die confusion between proof and circulation reverse hubs created mixed-type coins. The 1999-S Close AM variety follows the database classification and is scarce. It carries a meaningful premium over the standard 1999-S Proof. Authentication by a major grading service is important, as the spacing difference requires careful comparison. Collectors of AM varieties consider 1998-S and 1999-S the key dates.
