About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced 3.3 billion cents in 2003. The United States invaded Iraq in March, launching a war that would last far longer and cost far more than its architects predicted. The swift initial military victory gave way to a protracted occupation. The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during reentry on February 1, killing all seven crew members and grounding the shuttle program again.

The 2003 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark. It is common in all grades and circulated during the opening year of a conflict that would define American foreign policy for a generation.
