About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced 4.29 billion cents in 2006. The Iraq War remained the dominant political issue. The midterm elections in November delivered a decisive victory for Democrats, who recaptured both chambers of Congress. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld resigned the day after the election. The housing market, inflated by easy credit and speculative excess, was nearing its peak.

The 2006 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and is common. It circulated during the final years of the housing bubble, when easy money flowed and few imagined the crash to come. Collectors include it as a standard issue.
