About this coinHistory

Denver produced over 2.84 billion cents in 2008, bearing the "D" mintmark. These are the last Denver circulation cents to carry the Lincoln Memorial reverse. The financial crisis hit Denver's output; production was down significantly from prior years as the economy contracted and demand for new coinage fell.

The 2008-D circulated during the worst financial crisis in generations. Banks failed. Home values plummeted. Millions of Americans lost their jobs, their savings, or both. The cent, as always, continued its rounds in pockets and registers, unbothered by the chaos above. The 2008-D is common but carries the distinction of being Denver's farewell to a design that had served the nation for 50 years.
