The 2010-D Satin Finish Lincoln Shield cent was struck at the Denver Mint for inclusion in the 2010 Uncirculated Mint Set. Like its Philadelphia counterpart, the Denver satin finish cent features a soft, burnished luster produced through a special minting process. The burnished blanks and modified dies create a surface distinct from both the proof finish and the standard circulation strike. Approximately 583,897 sets were produced, each containing one Philadelphia and one Denver example of every circulating denomination.
The 2010 Mint Set was the last year the U.S. Mint offered satin finish coins, ending a six-year experiment that began in 2005. The satin finish format had its admirers among collectors who appreciated the improved detail and eye appeal compared to regular business strikes. The Denver satin finish Shield cent bears the "D" mintmark on the obverse, distinguishing it from the Philadelphia version. Both mints' satin finish cents from 2010 represent the intersection of two transitions: the final year of the satin finish program and the first year of the Shield reverse design.
