About this coinHistory

The 2010 Satin Finish Lincoln Shield cent was a special collector version produced at the Philadelphia Mint for the 2010 Uncirculated Mint Set. Satin finish coins differ from both circulation strikes and proofs. The Mint uses specially burnished blanks and slightly modified dies to produce a soft, uniform luster across the entire coin surface, without the mirrored fields of a proof or the rough texture of a standard business strike. The result is a coin with a matte-like glow that reveals design details more clearly than a typical circulation coin.

The U.S. Mint offered satin finish coins in its uncirculated sets from 2005 through 2010, making the 2010 Shield cent satin finish one of the final coins produced in this format. Approximately 583,897 sets were sold. Because these coins were handled individually and packaged in protective holders, they typically survive in pristine condition. The satin finish Shield cent provides collectors with a high-quality example of the first year of the new reverse design. After 2010, the Mint discontinued the satin finish format, returning to standard uncirculated coins in its annual sets.
