About this coinHistory

The 2010-S Proof Lincoln Shield cent was the first proof version of the new Shield reverse, struck at the San Francisco Mint for inclusion in the 2010 proof set. Approximately 1.69 million proof cents were produced, each featuring mirror-like fields contrasted with frosted raised design elements. The Shield reverse by Lyndall Bass translates well to the proof format; the thirteen vertical stripes on the shield and the fine lettering on the scroll emerge with crisp definition.

San Francisco's proof coinage tradition ensures that every specimen meets exacting quality standards. Proof dies are specially treated and polished, and each planchet is struck multiple times at elevated pressure. The 2010 proof set marked the beginning of a new chapter for the denomination, replacing the familiar Memorial reverse with the Shield design for years to come. Collectors who had assembled complete sets of 2009 bicentennial proofs continued into the Shield series in 2010.
