The 2011-S Proof Lincoln Shield cent was produced at the San Francisco Mint for the annual proof set. Approximately 1.67 million proof cents were struck, each displaying the deep cameo contrast between mirrored fields and frosted design elements that collectors expect. The Shield reverse by Lyndall Bass shows particularly well in the proof format, with each of the thirteen shield stripes sharply defined.
San Francisco proof cents serve primarily as collectibles rather than as spending money. The Mint sells them directly to collectors through annual proof sets, and most never enter circulation. The 2011-S proof production was slightly lower than 2010, part of a gradual decline in proof set sales that continued through the mid-2010s as the Mint's collector base evolved. Each proof cent undergoes careful quality control before inclusion in the sealed proof set packaging.
