About this coinHistory

The 2011 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint continued the new reverse design into its second year of production. Mintage rose to over 2.4 billion pieces, reflecting steady demand for cents in everyday commerce. The obverse still carries Victor David Brenner's portrait, which by 2011 had appeared on the denomination for 102 consecutive years, making it the longest-running portrait design on any U.S. coin.

The Shield reverse by Lyndall Bass had settled into its role as the permanent Lincoln cent design. The thirteen-stripe shield, the "ONE CENT" scroll, and the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" motto formed a clean, balanced composition. Philadelphia cents of this era bear no mintmark, continuing a tradition that dates to the founding of the first U.S. Mint in Philadelphia in 1792. Collectors typically obtain these coins in uncirculated condition from bank rolls, as the sheer production volume makes them readily accessible.
