About this coinHistory

The 2011-D Lincoln Shield cent was struck at the Denver Mint with a mintage exceeding 2.5 billion pieces, slightly higher than Philadelphia's output for the year. Denver continued its role as a high-volume production facility, meeting demand for cents throughout the western United States and beyond. The "D" mintmark below the date identifies the coin's origin.

By 2011, the Shield reverse had become the familiar face of the Lincoln cent, replacing the Lincoln Memorial image that a generation of Americans had grown up seeing. The transition from Memorial to Shield happened through the bridge year of 2009 and its four bicentennial designs. Denver's consistent billion-plus production of Shield cents through the early 2010s reflected an economy still reliant on physical currency for small transactions, even as debit cards, mobile payments, and electronic commerce continued to grow.
