About this coinHistory

The 2012 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint reached a mintage of over 3.1 billion pieces, a significant jump from the prior year. The increase reflected both the economy's recovery from the 2008 financial crisis and the persistent demand for cents in retail transactions. Vending machines, cash registers, and sales tax calculations all contributed to the need for a steady supply of one-cent coins.

The obverse portrait of Lincoln by Victor David Brenner had been in continuous use since 1909, and the 2012 issue marked 103 years of the same basic design. No other U.S. coin has maintained the same obverse image for so long. The Shield reverse entered its third year of production, becoming increasingly familiar to the public. Philadelphia's lack of a mintmark on these coins sometimes causes confusion among new collectors, who may assume that a coin without a mintmark is an error.
