About this coinHistory

The 2014 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint reached a mintage of approximately 3.99 billion pieces, approaching the four-billion mark. Production continued to climb as the U.S. economy strengthened and cash transactions persisted alongside the growing adoption of electronic payments. Philadelphia's output alone exceeded the total annual cent production of many earlier decades.

The 2014 cent marked 105 years of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait on the obverse. Brenner, a Lithuanian-born sculptor who immigrated to the United States in 1890, never imagined his design would endure for more than a century. He was commissioned to create the portrait for the cent's debut in 1909, the centennial of Lincoln's birth. The Shield reverse continued to serve as a unifying symbol, its thirteen stripes representing the states Lincoln fought to keep together during the Civil War.
