About this coinHistory

The 2014-D Lincoln Shield cent was the Denver Mint's offering for the year, with a mintage exceeding 4.15 billion pieces. Denver's output surpassed Philadelphia's, making the 2014-D one of the highest-mintage Shield cents produced up to that point. The enormous production volume means that uncirculated examples remain plentiful in dealer inventories and bank rolls.

Denver's capacity to produce billions of coins annually stems from decades of infrastructure investment. The current Denver Mint facility, completed in 1906, has been expanded and modernized repeatedly. Its coin presses, planchet preparation equipment, and quality control systems operate around the clock during peak production periods. The 2014-D cent is a common date in the Shield series, but it documents the ongoing scale of American coinage in an era when many predicted the cent's demise.
