About this coinHistory

The 2015 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint posted a mintage of approximately 4.67 billion pieces, a record-setting figure for the Shield series. The enormous production reflected a combination of economic growth, population increase, and the persistent loss of cents from active circulation. Many cents are saved in jars, dropped between couch cushions, or discarded, creating a constant need for replacement coins.

The 2015 cent entered circulation alongside a renewed public debate about whether the United States should retire the denomination. Canada had eliminated its one-cent coin in 2013, and several other countries had dropped their lowest denominations. Proponents of keeping the cent argued that eliminating it would lead to rounding that would disadvantage consumers. The cent survived, as it had through similar debates in the 1980s and 1990s, and the Philadelphia Mint continued to produce billions annually.
