About this coinHistory

The 2016 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint achieved a mintage of approximately 4.9 billion pieces, setting another production high for the series. The sustained demand for cents in the mid-2010s defied predictions that electronic payments would render physical small change obsolete. Cash transactions, while declining as a share of total commerce, still accounted for a significant portion of retail purchases.

The 2016 cent marked the seventh year of the Shield reverse design, which had become as familiar to Americans as the Memorial reverse before it. The shield's thirteen stripes, representing the original states, continued to provide a direct visual connection to Lincoln's role in preserving the Union. Philadelphia's billions of cents moved through Federal Reserve channels to banks across the country, entering circulation through cash registers, toll booths, and vending machines.
