About this coinHistory

The 2016-D Lincoln Shield cent from the Denver Mint had a mintage of approximately 4.81 billion pieces, nearly matching Philadelphia's enormous output. Together, the two mints produced over 9.7 billion cents in 2016, one of the highest combined totals in the denomination's history. The sheer volume of production means that 2016-D cents will remain among the most common coins in existence for generations.

Denver's production infrastructure handled the massive output efficiently. Modern coin presses at the Denver facility can strike hundreds of coins per minute, and the Mint operates multiple presses simultaneously for each denomination. The 2016-D cent is indistinguishable from other Shield cents of the era in design and composition, bearing the same copper-plated zinc construction, 2.5-gram weight, and 19.05-millimeter diameter that have defined the denomination since 1982.
