About this coinHistory

The 2017 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint had a mintage of approximately 4.43 billion pieces. The 2017 cent year was notable for an unusual development: the Philadelphia Mint added the "P" mintmark to certain denominations for the first time in the facility's history, as part of an enhanced uncirculated program. However, the standard circulation cent from Philadelphia continued to bear no mintmark, following the convention that had existed since 1793.

The 2017 production continued the trend of multi-billion-cent annual output from Philadelphia. The Shield reverse by Lyndall Bass had been in use for eight years, and its clean geometric design showed no signs of being replaced. The obverse portrait by Victor David Brenner, now 108 years old, remained the face of the Lincoln cent. No other coin design in American history has endured as long.
