About this coinHistory

The 2017-D Lincoln Shield cent was the Denver Mint's contribution for the year, with a mintage of approximately 4.72 billion pieces. Denver's output exceeded Philadelphia's, continuing the pattern of Denver occasionally outproducing the older facility. The "D" mintmark has appeared on Denver Lincoln cents since 1911, making it one of the most recognized mint identifiers in American coinage.

The 2017-D cent circulated alongside several special issues that year, including the Philadelphia "P" mintmark cent and the San Francisco Enhanced Uncirculated cent, both firsts for the denomination. While these special versions attracted collector attention, the billions of regular 2017-D cents served their traditional role in everyday commerce. The coin's copper-plated zinc composition kept production costs lower than a solid copper cent would have required, though each cent still cost more to manufacture than its one-cent face value.
