About this coinHistory

The 2017-P Lincoln Shield cent represents a historic moment in American numismatics. For the first time in the Philadelphia Mint's 225-year history, a "P" mintmark appeared on a cent. Philadelphia had traditionally used no mintmark on its coins, with brief exceptions for certain denominations beginning in the 1970s. The 2017-P cent was produced as part of an Enhanced Uncirculated set celebrating the centennial of the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the USA's involvement in coin collecting and civic engagement.

The mintage of approximately 4.43 billion for the standard Philadelphia cent means the "P" mintmark version is identical in quantity, as these were the same coins. However, the Enhanced Uncirculated specimens distributed in special sets bear distinct finishing that sets them apart. The appearance of the "P" mintmark on a Lincoln cent was a significant departure from tradition. Since the cent's introduction in 1909, Philadelphia issues had never carried a mint identifier. Collectors took immediate notice, and the 2017-P cent became an instant topic of discussion in the numismatic community.
