The 2023 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint had a mintage of approximately 3.25 billion pieces. The 2023 cent marked 114 years of the Brenner obverse design and the fourteenth year of the Shield reverse. The Lincoln cent had long since become the most enduring coin design in American history, outlasting the Standing Liberty quarter, the Walking Liberty half dollar, the Mercury dime, and every other iconic 20th-century design. The Brenner portrait's longevity reflects both artistic merit and legislative inertia; changing the design would require congressional action or a specific exercise of the Treasury Secretary's authority.
