About this coinHistory

The 2023-D Lincoln Shield cent was produced at the Denver Mint with a mintage of approximately 3.4 billion pieces. Denver's output slightly exceeded Philadelphia's, maintaining the familiar balance between the two production facilities. The "D" mintmark continues to appear on the obverse below the date, a placement that has been standard for Denver Lincoln cents since 1911.

The 2023-D cent is a common modern issue, readily available in uncirculated condition from bank rolls and Mint products. Collectors who build complete date-and-mintmark sets include both the Philadelphia (no mintmark) and Denver ("D") examples for each year. The Shield reverse design showed no signs of change, and the Mint had announced no plans to modify the cent's appearance. The coin's copper-plated zinc composition continued to keep production costs lower than a solid copper or bronze cent would require.
