New Orleans produced 3,396,000 quarters in 1893, the second year of branch-mint Barber output and a modest step up from the 1892-O figure. The 1893-O is the first New Orleans Barber Quarter to wear the relocated mintmark, set above the space between R and D or directly above the D of DOLLAR rather than over the R of QUARTER. That change traces back to die-life problems with the 1892 placement, where the punch position contributed to chipping near the R. Two mintmark sub-positions are documented for the date, both standard and neither commanding a premium. Production used the Type II reverse hub throughout, the design that would carry through 1900. Distribution stayed regional, and most coins entered Gulf and Mississippi-valley commerce.
Strike quality on the 1893-O is the date's defining issue. Many surviving coins show incomplete arrows in the eagle's left talon, soft feather detail on the lower right eagle leg, and weakness in the shield's horizontal lines. Liberty's hair above the ear often holds reasonable detail because the obverse die received the better pressure, but the wreath leaves and the cap's center can soften under pressure deficit. The denticle ring around both sides tends to come up complete. Authentication notes for the date include checking for proper die-marker alignment around the mintmark and confirming the eagle's wing-and-shield junction shows the expected Type II hub geometry; counterfeits are not a primary concern at this date but added-mintmark fakes do circulate when buyers chase higher grades. Mint State coins concentrate at MS-62 through MS-64, with MS-65 a real step up and MS-66 scarce.
For the date-set collector the 1893-O is a clean fill at moderate cost, with VF and XF the practical sweet spot for budget builders and AU the better stop for eye appeal. Type-set buyers rarely pursue it specifically because the Philadelphia issue costs less and strikes better, but New Orleans specialists and Barber-series completionists actively seek the date. Acquisition path runs through specialist dealers and major auctions, with circulated coins steady and Mint State requiring patience.
