About this coinHistory

San Francisco posted a 1,454,535 mintage on the 1893-S quarter, up from the very tight 1892-S figure but still firmly in the lower production tier for the series. The date is the second San Francisco Barber Quarter and the first to use the corrected mintmark placement. Engravers shifted the S to the right in 1893, positioning it either above the space between the R of QUARTER and the D of DOLLAR or above the left edge of the D, depending on the die. The repositioning addressed the die-chipping the 1892 over-R placement had caused. Both sub-positions trade at parity and are noted in specialist references rather than carrying separate price guides. Production used the Type II reverse hub. Distribution stayed largely West-coast, and the coins worked through commerce hard.

Strike is the recurring 1893-S story. The lower right eagle leg, arrow shafts, and shield base typically show softness even on well-preserved coins. Liberty's hair detail above the ear holds up better than the wreath leaves, which often flatten under the cap. Surface preservation tells the rest of the tale: most surviving 1893-S quarters circulated for decades, and original-surface coins at XF and above are the harder find. Population data through PCGS and NGC (the major TPGs, or third-party grading services) places the date well below the 1892-S in Mint State counts at the higher tiers, with MS-64 and above appearing at auction in measured rather than steady numbers. Authentication starts with mintmark style; the genuine S has a distinct upper serif geometry that altered-date or added-mintmark fakes typically miss.

Position in a date-and-mintmark set is mandatory and not negotiable. Type-set buyers can skip the 1893-S in favor of cheaper Philadelphia coins, but San Francisco specialists and Barber-series completionists need it. The date carries the appeal of a sub-1.5-million mintage without crossing into the series' major key territory, where 1896-S, 1913-S, and 1901-S sit at multiples of the 1893-S price. Acquisition path: G through F is regular dealer stock, VF and XF need a careful look at eye appeal, and Mint State requires auction patience.
