The 1904-O quarter was struck at the New Orleans Mint to a mintage of 2,456,000 pieces, a typical figure for the facility during its final productive years. New Orleans had been a continuous Barber quarter producer since 1892, and 1904 fell within the late operating period before the branch's coinage functions wound down in 1909. The "O" mintmark sits on the reverse below the eagle's tail feathers, centered between the arrow shafts and the wreath base. Distribution of the year's New Orleans output flowed primarily into commerce across the Gulf and Mississippi corridors, and most pieces saw substantial circulation. The 1904-O is not a low-mintage date by series standards, but it is one of the more difficult New Orleans Barber quarters to locate in upper Mint State grades because so little of the output was set aside in original condition. Survival skews heavily toward circulated material in the VG through Fine range.
Strike on the 1904-O runs below the series average, consistent with New Orleans output of the period. Weak central detail on Liberty's hair and softness in the eagle's shield horizontal lines are typical, and the LIBERTY headband often shows only partial letter sharpness even on technically uncirculated examples. Grade distribution at the major TPGs (third-party grading services like PCGS and NGC) is broad through Fine and VF but thins quickly above XF; AU and Mint State populations are notably smaller than the 2.4 million mintage would suggest. MS-65 and finer survivors are condition-rare and command meaningful premiums. No major die varieties are catalogued in Cherrypickers' Guide for the year. Authentication should confirm O mintmark position below the eagle's tail; the punch is small and can fill in on worn dies, but the location is consistent throughout the New Orleans run.
For collectors the 1904-O serves as a representative late New Orleans issue. Mid-circulated examples are inexpensive and readily available; choice AU and uncirculated pieces require patience and selectivity for original surfaces. Date-and-mint set builders typically secure this issue at the VF to XF level before pushing higher. Auction results favor examples with full headband definition.
