About this coinHistory

The 1905 quarter recorded a mintage of 4,968,250 pieces at Philadelphia, a step down from the heavy 1904 output and closer to the median figure for the series. Production at the parent mint continued under Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber's original design specifications, with no procedural changes from the prior year. The 1905 year-set is again a three-coin distribution: Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco all struck quarters this year, with San Francisco resuming quarter coinage at 1,884,000 after sitting out the denomination in 1904. The Philadelphia issue circulated broadly through eastern and central commerce, and roll-era hoarding during the 1930s preserved a reasonable supply of original-skin survivors. The date is not condition-rare but it is not as common in gem as the heaviest mintage years; collectors regularly find the 1905 P in MS-63 and MS-64 holders with locating an MS-66 requiring some effort.

Strike on the 1905 Philadelphia is generally good. Liberty's hair detail under the cap typically comes up sharp, the wreath ribbon and laurel leaves separate cleanly, and the eagle's shield horizontal lines are usually fully struck. The lower arrow feathers and right talon occasionally show softness on later die states. Grade distribution at the major TPGs (third-party grading services like PCGS and NGC) shows substantial population through MS-64, falling off noticeably into MS-66 and becoming quite scarce at MS-67. No major die varieties are catalogued in Cherrypickers' Guide for the year. Luster on choice survivors runs toward a satiny frost. Authentication is straightforward; the date is not a counterfeit target given its accessible price levels in lower grades.

For collectors the 1905 Philadelphia is a workhorse date suitable for type purposes and date-set completion. Mint State examples appear regularly in major-dealer inventory and at auction through MS-65 at predictable price levels. Higher grades require selectivity but do not demand exceptional patience.
