About this coinHistory

The 1905-O quarter was produced at the New Orleans Mint to a mintage of 1,230,000 pieces, the lowest New Orleans Barber quarter figure since 1897-O and the smallest mintage of the year across all three operating facilities. Output at the branch had been trending downward across the silver denominations as the Mint shifted weight to the larger Philadelphia and San Francisco operations, and 1905 represented a particularly thin output year for New Orleans quarter coinage. The "O" mintmark sits on the reverse beneath the eagle's tail feathers in the location used throughout the New Orleans run. Distribution remained regional, with most pieces entering circulation across Louisiana and the Gulf trade corridor. The date is condition-scarce despite not being classified as a key or semi-key on this site; original Mint State survivors are decidedly thin, and the date is one of the more challenging single-mint issues to assemble in choice uncirculated condition.

Strike on the 1905-O runs typical of the late New Orleans output, which is to say generally below the series average. The LIBERTY headband often shows incomplete letter detail, Liberty's hair under the cap can lack the sharpness seen on Philadelphia coins, and the eagle's shield horizontal lines are commonly soft in the upper register. The denticle ring is usually complete. Grade distribution at the major TPGs (third-party grading services like PCGS and NGC) is heavily weighted toward circulated grades, with VF and XF representing the most common encounter. Mint State populations are modest and gem-grade survivors are genuinely scarce. No major die varieties are documented in Cherrypickers' Guide for this issue. Authentication should verify the O mintmark on the reverse below the eagle's tail; the position is consistent and well-documented across the New Orleans series.

For collectors the 1905-O fills a date-and-mint slot that is affordable in lower circulated grades but demands patience and budget at the choice uncirculated level. Mid-circulated examples appear regularly; AU and MS material requires active searching, particularly with full headband sharpness. The date is a sleeper among late New Orleans issues.
