1906 Proof

The 1906 Proof Barber Quarter is a Philadelphia issue with a verified proof mintage of 675 pieces, sold through the Mint's annual subscription program. The 3,656,435 figure above is a database error carrying the year's circulation total; the build pass will replace it with the correct 675. The 675-piece order book sits at the lower end of the 1900-1907 cluster. The 1906 sits five years into the all-brilliant finish window that opened with the 1902 proofs, with dies prepared so that fields and devices alike came up fully mirrored rather than the bright-on-black cameo contrast standard through 1901. Standard specs apply: 6.25 grams, 24.3 millimeters, 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, reeded edge. The year also marks the first appearance of Denver-mint Barber Quarters on the circulation side, though the proof program ran exclusively at Philadelphia.

Authentication on the 1906 proof rests on four standard markers visible under a 10x loupe. The rims come up squared rather than rounded, the denticles run fully formed around the periphery, the fields carry the watery mirror depth that only polished dies produce, and high-relief detail in Liberty's hair and the eagle's shield and feathers comes up razor-crisp. The all-brilliant finish means Cameo and Deep Cameo designations from PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, are markedly scarcer than on the cameo-era proofs. The 1906 also requires the standard prooflike-business-strike check against the 3.66 million circulation run, but the squared rim, full denticle count, and proof-only sharpness remain unmistakable. Light die-polish lines are normal for the type.

The 1906 trades on a tight band with the 1904, 1905, and 1907 brilliant proofs, with PR63 and PR64 examples at predictable price levels and PR65 coins appearing at the major auctions on a regular schedule. Certified Cameo coins draw the meaningful premium because of the finish-era scarcity, and Deep Cameo examples remain a specialist target that commands multi-thousand-dollar levels. PCGS and NGC data place combined certified survival in the mid three hundreds, thinning sharply at PR66 Cameo and above.
