The 1907 Proof Barber Quarter is a Philadelphia issue with a verified proof mintage of 575 pieces, the lowest order book of the 1900-1907 cluster and one of the lower proof figures in the entire Barber Quarter series. The 7,192,575 figure above is a database error carrying the year's circulation total; the build pass will replace it with the correct 575. The pullback corresponds to the Panic of 1907, which dampened collector and dealer purchasing power. The 1907 sits six years into the all-brilliant finish era that opened with the 1902 proofs. Standard specs apply: 6.25 grams, 24.3 millimeters, 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, reeded edge. The matte and sandblast proof formats that appeared on the new Saint-Gaudens gold coins in late 1907 were never used on the quarter denomination.
Authentication on the 1907 proof rests on four standard markers visible under a 10x loupe. The rims come up squared rather than rounded, the denticles run fully formed around the periphery, the fields carry the watery mirror depth that only polished dies produce, and Liberty's hair along with the eagle's shield and feather definition comes up razor-crisp. The all-brilliant finish means Cameo and Deep Cameo designations from PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, are significantly scarcer than on the cameo-era issues; limited Cameo survivors typically show partial rather than full bright-on-black contrast. The 1907 also requires the standard prooflike-business-strike check against the 7.19 million circulation run, but the squared rim, full denticle count, and proof-only sharpness remain unmistakable.
The 1907 trades at a meaningful premium to the 1905 and 1906 because of the 575 mintage, with PR63 and PR64 brilliant examples at elevated price levels and PR65 coins appearing at the major auctions a handful of times each year. Certified Cameo coins draw a substantial step up, and Deep Cameo examples remain a specialist target. PCGS and NGC data place combined certified survival in the low three hundreds, with the curve thinning sharply at PR66 Cameo and above. The collecting arc moves from a PR64 in brilliant toward a PR65 Cameo, with original cabinet toning producing the eye-appeal coins. For the broader story of Charles E. Barber's design and the series' production arc, see the Barber Quarter series history.
