About this coinHistory

The 1907-D Barber quarter marks the first appearance of a Denver mintmark on the denomination. The Denver Mint had begun coinage operations in 1906, and the 1907 quarter delivery of 2,484,000 pieces was part of the facility's early effort to supply silver coinage to the booming mountain-west economy. Denver served mining towns, railroad hubs, and the rapidly expanding cities of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and the Dakotas, where quarter dollars circulated heavily through assay-office payrolls, saloon tills, and railway commissary purchases. The "D" mintmark on Barber quarters debuted on this coin, making the 1907-D a charter issue for the branch within the series.

Strike quality on 1907-D quarters varies, but the issue is generally better produced than its New Orleans counterpart of the same year. Denver dies were typically retired earlier in their useful life, and central detail on Liberty's hair and the eagle's shield is often respectable on AU and better examples. PCGS estimates roughly 4,000 surviving coins across all grades, with about 250 in Mint State and only 30 at gem level, a condition profile that makes uncirculated examples genuinely scarce despite the seven-figure mintage. The "D" mintmark sits on the reverse below the eagle's tail feathers, immediately above the wreath; authentication should confirm a clean, upright "D" with the correct serif structure and consistent punch depth, since added mintmarks have been documented on Barber series issues with stronger key dates and the same diagnostic vigilance applies to early Denver coins as condition premiums climb. Weight should hit 6.25 grams within tolerance, diameter 24.3 mm, and the reeded edge should present continuously without disturbance behind the mintmark area. Bag marks on Liberty's cheek and the eagle's breast remain the dominant grading factor above MS-63, and luster quality on the obverse fields drives much of the premium between typical MS-63 and gem MS-65 examples.
