The 1907-O Barber quarter carried a 4,560,000-piece delivery from the New Orleans Mint during the first four-mint year of the series. New Orleans was, at this point, a mature silver coinage facility specializing in dimes, quarters, and half dollars for the Gulf-region economy, and 1907 represented a strong production year for the southern branch. The output supplied banks across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas, where quarter dollars saw heavy use in dockside commerce, cotton-market settlements, and saloon trade. The coins entered circulation hard and stayed there for decades, which shapes the grade distribution available to collectors today.
New Orleans 1907 quarters typically display the softer strike characteristic of the branch mint. Dies arrived from Philadelphia in working condition but were often run to higher die states before replacement, and the result is a tendency toward weakness on Liberty's hair detail, the wreath ribbon above her ear, and on the eagle's left (viewer's right) wing tip. Authenticating the "O" mintmark is straightforward: it sits on the reverse below the eagle, between the arrow feathers and the wreath base, and presents as a small, slightly rounded letter. Authentication checks should confirm the mintmark depth and shape, since the broader 1907-1909 New Orleans run carries collector premium that has historically attracted altered-date scrutiny on adjacent issues. Surviving examples are concentrated in circulated grades from Good through Fine; VF and XF coins are obtainable, while AU pieces appear in noticeably lower numbers. True Mint State examples are scarce, and gem-quality coins with full luster on the obverse fields are condition rarities that command meaningful premiums over typical MS-60 to MS-62 pieces. Weight should hit 6.25 grams within tolerance and diameter 24.3 mm.
