About this coinHistory

The 1821 Capped Bust quarter arrived during a period of cautious recovery for the United States Mint, which had only resumed quarter dollar production in 1815 after a thirteen-year pause. Chief Engraver John Reich had introduced the Capped Bust design before leaving the Mint in 1817, and his successors continued striking quarters intermittently as bullion supplies allowed. The 1821 issue carries a reported mintage of 216,851 pieces, a respectable figure for the early federal era but still small by modern standards. Production took place exclusively in Philadelphia, then the only operating branch of the U.S. Mint. Most 1821 quarters circulated heavily through eastern commerce and saw decades of pocket use before any survived as collectibles, leaving high-grade examples genuinely scarce today.

The obverse displays Liberty facing left, wearing a soft cloth cap secured by a beaded headband inscribed LIBERTY, with seven stars to the left and six to the right framing the date below. The reverse carries a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch beneath a scroll reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the 25 C. denomination encircling the rim. Specifications follow the Type 1 large-size standard: 27 millimeters in diameter, 6.74 grams of 89.24 percent silver, with a reeded edge. Collectors and graders at PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) reference Browning die marriages B-1 through B-5 for the year; authentication typically checks weight tolerance, edge reeding count, and die-state matches against Browning plates, since cleaned and lightly tooled examples are common at the auction level.

Survivors above About Uncirculated grade are notably scarce, and Mint State examples draw competitive bidding at Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers sales. Population reports at PCGS and NGC together register only a few hundred certified pieces across all grades, with most concentrated below XF45. New collectors should weigh the 1821 as an accessible semi-key entry into the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
