Capped Bust Quarters

John Reich designed the Capped Bust quarter, bringing his signature Liberty-in-a-cloth-cap motif to the denomination in 1815 after yet another gap in quarter production. No quarters had been struck since 1807, an eight-year absence that left the denomination entirely dependent on aging Draped Bust pieces and Spanish silver for circulation needs. Reich had already applied the Capped Bust design to the half dollar in 1807 and the dime in 1809, and the quarter followed the same template: Liberty facing left wearing a cap inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by stars, with a heraldic eagle on the reverse. Reich left the Mint in 1817, and subsequent die work fell to Robert Scot, William Kneass, and eventually Christian Gobrecht, all of whom maintained Reich's basic design with minor modifications through the end of the series in 1838.
