About this coinHistory

The 1824 over 1822 quarter is the only known die variety for the year and another reflection of how the Philadelphia Mint reused obverse dies during the 1820s when fresh date hubs were not prepared. Mintage figures for 1824 are estimated at roughly 24,000 pieces, making it one of the scarcest quarters of the decade. Like its 1823 predecessor, the 1824 quarter program was small because Mint output was focused on half dollars, which carried the bulk of the country's silver coinage in the period. Survivors saw years of commercial circulation before any concentrated saving began, and most known examples grade Good through Very Fine. Mint State pieces are very rare and rarely come to market.

The diagnostic is on the date: a clear remnant of an underlying "2" appears within the body of the "4," most visibly at the upper portion where the curve of the original "2" intrudes into the open space of the corrected digit. The variety is cataloged as Browning B-1, the only known die marriage for the year. Specifications match the broader Type 1 large-size format: 27 millimeters across, 6.74 grams of 89.24 percent silver and 10.76 percent copper, with a reeded edge. PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) attribute and label the overdate on certified holders, which simplifies authentication for beginning collectors. Weight, edge reeding, and the visible underdigit are the three primary checks for this issue.

Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers have established a reliable market for problem-free pieces in VG through XF, and certified populations at PCGS and NGC together register well under 500 examples across all grades. Higher-grade survivors are particularly thin, with Mint State examples concentrated in MS61 to MS63 and almost no representation above MS64. The 1824/2 is a core semi-key entry in the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
