The 1823 over 1822 quarter is the rarest regular-issue circulation strike in the entire Capped Bust quarter series, with a reported mintage of only about 17,800 pieces. It is also the only known 1823-dated variety, since the Philadelphia Mint did not prepare a fresh date die for the year and instead reused a leftover 1822 obverse, punching a "3" directly over the existing "2." The Mint's silver coinage program in 1823 was dominated by half dollars, and quarter production was an afterthought. Many surviving 1823/2 quarters show heavy wear, evidence of generations of unrecognized circulation. The variety has been a marquee target for advanced collectors since the late nineteenth century, when early numismatists first cataloged it as a distinct issue.
Authentication starts at the date: under magnification, the upper loop of the underlying "2" is visible inside the lower portion of the "3," and a faint trace of the "2" base sometimes remains beneath the "3" curve. The variety is cataloged as Browning B-1, the only die marriage struck for the year. Specifications follow the Type 1 large-size standard at 27 millimeters and 6.74 grams of 89.24 percent silver. Because the coin commands strong prices even in low grades, counterfeits exist, including altered-date fakes made from common 1828 quarters; PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) have published authentication notes, and weight tolerance plus die-state diagnostics are reliable checks. Beginners should never buy a raw 1823/2 without third-party certification.
Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers regularly handle the issue, with results scaling sharply by grade and original surfaces. PCGS and NGC population data combined records only a few hundred certified survivors, the majority of which fall in the Good to Very Fine range with very few examples surviving above Extremely Fine. Premium-grade pieces draw determined bidding when they cross the auction block. The 1823/2 is the headline rarity of the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
