The 1822 25 over 50 C quarter is one of the most famous engraving errors in American coinage. Sharing the same 64,080-piece reported mintage with the standard 1822, this variety was struck from a reverse die on which the denomination "50 C." had been punched first, almost certainly intended for a half dollar die. Mint workers noticed the mistake and corrected it digit by digit, punching a "2" over the "5" and a "5" over the "0," but the underlying "50" remained visible beneath the corrected denomination. The blunder reflects how die preparation worked at the Philadelphia Mint in the 1820s, where individual punches were used by hand and engravers sometimes grabbed the wrong tools. Survival is much lower than the standard 1822, since the variety was not widely recognized at the time of striking.
Authentication centers on the reverse: under a loupe, the lower curves of a "5" and the bowl of a "0" are clearly visible beneath the "25 C." denomination, with the "0" of "50" running into and around the "C." The variety is cataloged as Browning B-2, the only known die marriage carrying the overpunch. Specifications match the rest of the Type 1 large-size format at 27 millimeters and 6.74 grams of 89.24 percent silver with a reeded edge. PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) both designate this variety on holders, which protects buyers from misattributed standard 1822 coins. Beginners should verify the underdigit visually before paying the variety premium, since wear can soften the underlying "50" significantly on lower-grade examples.
Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers have produced strong results for problem-free pieces in VF and above, and population totals at PCGS and NGC remain well under 500 across all grades. The 25 over 50 C blunder is a centerpiece die-variety target in the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
