The 1819 Large 9 quarter belongs to a year of split punch sizes, when the Philadelphia Mint used two different digit punches for the final 9 of the date. The combined 1819 mintage stood at 144,000 quarters, a sharp drop from the 1818 figure and a number that reflects shifting Mint priorities toward half dollars during this period. The Capped Bust quarter was still a comparatively young denomination, with hand-punched dates created from individual digit punches rather than full date logotypes, which is why the same year could carry visibly different numerals. The Large 9 variety captures one of the punch choices in regular use that year and represents a meaningful share of the surviving 1819 population.
Like every Type 1 quarter, the coin measures 27 millimeters, weighs 6.74 grams, and was struck in 89.24 percent silver with a reeded edge. The Large 9 is identified by direct comparison of the final digit to the second 1 of the date or to the 8 immediately preceding it. The Large 9 stands taller, with a thicker upper loop and a more open lower curve that finishes closer to the denticles. Browning attributions B-1, B-2, and B-5 fall in the Large 9 group; collectors who chase die marriages use the relationship between obverse stars, denticle position, and reverse arrow alignment to confirm the marriage after first establishing the punch size. Authentication starts with weight verification, then a close look at the curl detail above Liberty's ear, where genuine strikes show layered hair lines even at lower grades.
The Large 9 trades alongside the Small 9 in most catalogs and is treated as a recognized sub-variety by PCGS and NGC, although populations are reported together in some references. Heritage Auctions has handled numerous Large 9 examples certified at each major service. The broader 1819 context lives in the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
