The 1819 Small 9 quarter shares the year's 144,000-coin mintage with its Large 9 sibling and rounds out a year defined by punch-size variation. Quarter production resumed only in 1818, and by 1819 the Philadelphia Mint was still operating with limited press time for the denomination, splitting effort with half dollars that absorbed most of the silver allocation. Because date digits were punched into each die by hand, engravers reached for whichever individual 9 punch was at the bench. The result is a year with two cleanly differentiated final digits, with the Small 9 forming the smaller-population grouping and providing a reliable target for die-marriage collectors trying to assemble a complete 1819 set.

Specifications match the rest of Type 1: 27-millimeter diameter, 6.74-gram weight, 89.24 percent silver and 10.76 percent copper, reeded edge. Identification is best done by comparing the final 9 to the preceding 8 and to the first digit 1 in the date. The Small 9 sits noticeably shorter than the 8 next to it; its upper loop is tighter, the body of the digit is thinner, and the lower curl ends well clear of the denticles. Browning B-3 and B-4 are the Small 9 die marriages, and confirmation comes from matching reverse details such as the position of the leaf clusters and the spacing of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. As an additional authentication check, the weight should sit at or very near 6.74 grams, and genuine pieces show even surface granularity rather than the cleaned look of polished counterfeits.

PCGS and NGC both certify the Small 9 as a recognized variety. Population is thinner than the Large 9 across most grade tiers, which translates into healthy premiums at Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers when problem-free pieces appear.
